SMS Opt-In Evidence for Message Reviewers

OGSN Guardian is a personal safety service. When a member triggers a Guardian SOS or safety alert, Guardian notifies that member's emergency contacts. This page documents the complete, production opt-in sequence for those SMS notifications. No customer information, phone numbers, tokens, medical data, or credentials appear here.

A Guardian member cannot consent on an emergency contact's behalf.

Entering someone else's number never authorizes SMS. Only the person who owns the number can opt in, on the public page below, and only after a one-time code proves they hold that number. Enforcement is server-side: every Guardian SMS send is rejected unless that exact normalized number has current, verified, active consent.

The opt-in sequence

  1. 1. A Guardian member adds an emergency contact

    The member enters a name and optionally a phone number and email. This grants NO SMS permission. The contact record is stored with SMS status “not invited” and every SMS path refuses that number.

  2. 2. The member sends the invitation

    Guardian generates a random, single-purpose, 72-hour expiring link. The member can email it, share it directly, or have Guardian send it as a single one-time invitation text. That invitation text is the only message a number can receive before it opts in: it identifies OWOS Guardian Safety Network, contains only the consent link, discloses message and data rates, and includes STOP and HELP instructions. No alerts, reminders, or marketing are ever sent to a number that has not confirmed itself, and suppressed (STOP) numbers receive nothing at all.

  3. 3. The contact opens the public consent page

    At /guardian-contact-consent/<token> the contact sees who invited them and no medical, location, or account information. They enter their own mobile number.

  4. 4. The contact checks a dedicated, unchecked-by-default SMS box

    SMS consent is a separate checkbox from the Terms and Privacy acknowledgment. The member cannot check it on the contact’s behalf — the box only exists on this public page, which is reached with the contact’s own token.

  5. 5. Guardian verifies possession of the number

    A 6-digit one-time code is sent to the number the contact entered. Consent remains “pending” (and unusable) until the code is confirmed. Codes expire in 10 minutes, allow 5 attempts, and are capped at 5 sends per invitation.

  6. 6. Consent becomes active and is recorded as evidence

    On success Guardian stores the contact record ID, member reference, normalized E.164 number, consent status, the exact consent-text version and its SHA-256 hash, consent and verification timestamps, invitation token ID, IP address, user agent, and the Terms and Privacy versions presented.

  7. 7. Declining is always allowed

    “No thanks — don’t text me” completes the invitation with no SMS permission. The contact remains an emergency contact and the member keeps full Guardian service. Declining never blocks anyone from the underlying product.

  8. 8. STOP, START, HELP

    Inbound STOP-type keywords immediately mark the number revoked and suppressed inside Guardian, in addition to Twilio’s carrier-level block. START only clears suppression — messaging resumes only after a fresh invitation and re-verification. HELP returns OGSN’s identity and support address.
